Transfer Executives, Managers, and Specialized Knowledge Employees
Our Loudoun County L-1 Immigration lawyers have over 28 years of experience in transferring professionals from abroad to open new offices in the United States. We also routinely move specialized workers and executives from abroad to their already existing U.S. office counterpart. The L-1 visa is a powerful tool for international companies to transfer key personnel to the United States. Whether you are moving executives or managers (L-1A) or specialized knowledge employees (L-1B), this visa enables your business to expand operations, grow teams, and strengthen global competitiveness.
What Are L-1A and L-1B Visas?
L-1A Visa (Executives & Managers)
- Designed for multinational executives and managers.
- Initial stay: Up to 1 year for new offices; up to 3 years for existing offices.
- Maximum stay: 7 years.
- Green Card Pathway: Eligible for EB-1C immigrant visa without labor certification.
L-1B Visa (Specialized Knowledge Employees)
- For employees with advanced expertise in company products, services, or processes.
- Initial stay: Up to 1 year for new offices; up to 3 years for existing offices.
- Maximum stay: 5 years.
- Pathway: May transition to permanent residency (though not as direct as L-1A).
Who Qualifies for the L-1 Visa?
Employer Requirements
- The U.S. company must have a qualifying relationship with the foreign company (parent, branch, affiliate, or subsidiary).
- For new offices, physical premises must be established in the U.S.
Employee Requirements
- Must have worked abroad for the foreign company for at least 1 continuous year within the last 3 years.
- Must be coming to the U.S. to work in either:
- Executive or managerial role (L-1A)
- Specialized knowledge capacity (L-1B)
Benefits of the L-1 Visa
- No lottery or annual cap – unlike H-1B visas.
- Dual intent – allows pursuit of permanent residency while in L-1 status.
- Family benefits – spouses (L-2 visa) can apply for work authorization; children under 21 may study in the U.S.
- Business growth – ideal for expanding global companies or launching U.S. operations.
